Given the length of the site, which is not oriented towards prevailing winds, the main goal of the proposal is to provide spaces that capture these winds as much as possible, a premise that will constitute the main conceptual guide of the project.
Cross ventilation from multiple directions is prioritized and considered a design tool. This is achieved with double-fronted passageways that additionally open up to the interior patios. The patios provide not only an essential passive environmental tool to increase ventilation and sunlight, but also a unit of spatial measurement with which all the rooms in the housing units will be conformed. These units are combined in groups of four, five or six to create one, two and three bedroom flats respectively. In this way, the building is organized with three bands of square rooms arranged in a concatenated and diagonal way, a kind of puzzle with the following qualities:
- All rooms, except the bathroom, have natural ventilation
- There are no corridors
- Multipurpose rooms are provided in addition to the required program
- 1, 2 and 3 bedroom flats are produced following the same spatial logic
